Being put in vulnerable positions, I was forced to navigate several different communities and find what’s available. I promise there will be zero judgment about your situation. There’s nothing that can surprise me, alarm me, or make me want to not help you. Everyone deserves happiness, and at the very least, their basic needs being met. Everyone deserves to find their peace; no matter what you’ve been through or what you’ve done. Our behaviors are simply symptoms, they are not who we are at our core. EBT (Food stamps) HEALTHCARE, STATE EMERGENCY RELIEF and MORE
When applying for these benefits, you need to locate your local department of human services office. It’s hard to share a link here. If you need help locating it, please reach out to me. You can google, “Apply for low income benefits in my state.” You can go to the office, but you can also apply online in most states, by creating an account and applying.
APPLY FOR DISABILITY: If you are suffering from chronic illness, whether physical or emotional, consider applying for disability. You will want to get a lawyer immediately. Every pro bono disability lawyer works differently. Some wait for the denial before they take your case, and some will help you right away. Try not to get discouraged. Most people are denied on their initial application. DO NOT reapply. You need to appeal that decision, and keep appealing it if necessary. Reapplying without a denial raises red flags in the system, and you are more likely to be denied assistance that way.
You can also apply for state disability while awaiting your determination from the social security administration. This typically requires a phone call, and it not typically available on any state’s website. The cash amount is low, and must be repaid once your disability is approved
Section 8 is a government assisted program. It helps individuals and families pay a portion of their rent. Rules apply. There are other state run programs. You can google, “Low income housing,” or, “housing help in my state” to find more.
Subsidized housing is very similar to section 8. They are typically state funded programs, but specific to one company or building, while section 8 is federally funded and more options for housing through the voucher.
Whether you’re guilty or not of a crime, it’s our right to have proper representation. Legal aid also helps with issues such as evictions, landlord problems and other housing issues, discrimination, department of health and human services issues and more. This is for low-income individuals.
There are many organizations that help with financial situations. This is another that is often based on your specific location. However, the Salvation Army is a great starting point.
These are food trucks that come to different locations and hand out free food. It’s typically produce, but mostly well worth it. Before COVID, you would typically walk in and wait in line. Most of these trucks now have everyone sit in their cars and wait in line, and people load your car for you.
This is a website and phone number you can call if you’re experiencing domestic violence. They can help you locate a shelter in your area to keep you safe. They can also refer you to other resources in the community for your specific situation.
This website is an amazing resource for sexual assault victims and survivors. This organization partners with RAINN, which is our countries largest organization that fights for rights of sexual assault victims. This is a recovery program that is Christ centered. These programs are not everywhere, but if there is one in your area, I highly recommend attending one. Most of the people that attend these programs do not go for a substance. There are small groups for codependency, depression, anxiety, porn addiction, eating disorders and more. The same 12 step principles are applied while working through whatever your addiction may be.
I’ve lived in my car before. I’m sharing some tips here, for people that choose not to go to a shelter, and I can’t blame you. It’s often safer to live in your car if you have one. Although, I’m not saying don’t go to a shelter. Shelter’s often have services that can help. Also, the Walmart parking lot is sort of a national place you can park your car. Most of them won’t bother you.
