Binding Connections

In the irony of life, connections bind
By blood or choice, our family defined
DNA may weave a thread so strong
Yet love and respect can never be wrong
Obligations lie not in genes alone
But in the kinship of hearts that’s grown
To find our tribe, where love’s pure art
We seek those who truly play a part
Healthy role models, friends so dear
In their embrace, we find what’s clear
The ties that bind, not just in name
But in the love that fuels life’s flame
So, choose your family, bold and true
For DNA does not define you
In hearts united, strength will show
In the family we choose to know
I want to make this very clear. Just because someone is related to you by blood, does NOT mean you owe them anything. I don't care who they are, if they are abusive, toxic, or anything that doesn't align with your personal morals and beliefs, you are not obligated to protect them, and stay in a situation that is damaging to your mental and physical health. I didn't grow up in a kind home. I grew up in a volatile and covertly abusive home. While I would give my mother a chance if she recognized her problems and truly worked on them, I don't have to, if I don't want to. She did me the worlds biggest favor by discarding me, as any narcissist would that knows someone doesn't comply to their wishes. She currently has my son to shit on, in the sense of having someone and something to complain about. When he realizes it, I'm not sure who's next for her, but I pray for their sanity, health, and ability to recognize it early on.
